New California film and tv tax credit to help Placer County with local productions
A historic expansion of the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program is expected to benefit Placer County as productions seek out locations to take advantage of new savings.
The move more than doubles the program’s annual funding—from $330 million to $750 million—and introduces key updates to keep production, below-the-line jobs and investments rooted in California.
“Since the new film tax credits now allow for a wider variety of projects, like TV shows, sitcoms and films, that means increased opportunities, especially for areas that are known in the industry,” said Placer’s Film Office Liaison Juli Johnston. “We really hope this may lure some productions back to California, which is where the many of the people working on the production enjoy living. I’m excited to see what this might mean for Placer County’s film industry – especially because we seem to be growing!”
Since 2009, the tax credit has generated over $27 billion in economic activity and supported more than 209,000 well-paying jobs with health and pension benefits by awarding nearly 850 projects.
In years past, for every dollar of tax credit awarded, California has seen massive returns – $24.40 in economic output, $16.14 in GDP and $8.60 in wages.
In Placer, the film office has been assisting the film community for over 30 years. Just last year, the office generated $5 million in related film production growth, adding millions of dollars to the local economy and thousands of jobs to the region.
“Placer truly is a gem and a perfect place to film, so we’re excited to have the state’s support to ensure we produce more local films and tv commercials right here in our backyard,” said Johnston.
The county’s film office provides free permits, discounted production services and connections to local crews and vendors. Additional permitting may be required depending on your location and the local jurisdiction. Johnston also offers support to help producers find crew lodging, feed staff on set or establish connections to ensure crews have the proper sign-offs to move forward with filming.
