The Beauty of Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is at the eastern end of Placer County, and the lake straddles the border between California and the state of Nevada. The western side of Lake Tahoe is in the state of California. The Lake is 21 miles in length (north to south) and 11 miles at the widest point. The elevation ranges from 6,223’ at lake level to 9,000’ from our mountain peaks

Production Tips

Crew

Local crew can be sourced via the Sacramento/Sierra/Tahoe section in the Reel Directory, the northern California production guide. For these crew members’ full listings go the Reel Directory main listing. There are many experienced local crews with skills specific to Tahoe (i.e. filming from a snowboard, high-altitude diving, and hauling production equipment via snowmobile).

Contact the Film Office for more information.

Drone

All federal FAA regulations for commercial filming apply in Lake Tahoe. Some jurisdictions have special restrictions. For instance, all California State Parks and State Beaches in the Lake Tahoe Basin have a ‘no drone’ policy because of the large number of park visitors year around. Their policy extends out 800’ from shore.

Contact film office for options.

Lodging

Tahoe abounds in lodging facilities of all budgets: five-star resorts, bed and breakfast establishments, picturesque motels, beautiful rental homes, and condos. To expedite your production’s lodging search with one phone call please contact the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association.

Shoulder season

Spring and Autumn is the shoulder season in Tahoe, the months between the summer and winter “high seasons”. Hotel rates and other prices may be less during nonpeak times. Traditionally these are observed from Easter to midJune (Spring) and between Labor Day and Thanksgiving (Autumn).

Winter Parking

Always track the weather forecast (use Tahoe City, CA as a point of reference). There is no parking allowed on shoulders and the sides of roads in the greater Tahoe area (this includes Truckee and Donner Summit) from Nov 1 May 1 to allow for snow removal equipment to operate. Make basecamp parking a part of your scout when filming in winter.
