Placer county's beauty provides perfect backdrop for film productions
Screen International has unveiled the shortlist for the second edition of the Global Production Awards which celebrates outstanding and sustainable work in the world of film and TV production, locations and studios.
Placer County was named one of five finalists for the Emerging Location Award this year.
Placer’s Film Office issued 27 permits and contributed to an estimated $5.53 million in film-related economic activity in the county last year. The office hosted many notable brands like Chevy, Toyota, Apple, Eddie Bauer, REI and Northface to film commercials and events.
Finalists for the Emerging Location Award:
- Placer-Lake Tahoe, US (Placer-Lake Tahoe Film Office)
- Film AlUla, Saudi Arabia (Film AlUla)
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia (NEOM Media Industries)
- Tampa Bay, US (Film Tampa Bay)
- Tirana, Albania (Tirana Film Office)
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the natural beauty and prestige of our county,” said Placer’s Film Office Liaison Juli Johnston. “We’re proud to be a finalist for this award.”
The winners will be announced at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2024 at a ceremony at Mademoiselle Gray Plage Barrière.
“Placer is a hotbed for film and TV productions, so much so that I’ve heard people calling it Hollywood North,” said Placer’s Economic Development Director Gloria Stearns. “Our film office is a vital driver of economic activity in the region and there’s not a better way to earn the recognition they deserve than an award like this.”
Judges for the second Global Production Awards include Sicario and John Wick producer Erica Lee, partner at Thunder Road Films; Asif Sadiq, Warner Bros’ chief global diversity, equity and inclusion officer; and Tim Clawson, Amazon Studios’ head of worldwide production and post production. The expert judging panel was assembled by specialist strategy consultancy Olsberg SPI.
